Verona Road
I've been helping on the scenic work and construction for a show called 'Verona Road'. Designed by Catherine Morgan, It's an Intermission Youth Theatre piece at St. Saviors Church in Knightsbridge.
The show is based on the Shakespeare favorite: Romeo and Juliet. Through workshops with inner city 'at risk' kids aged from 14 to 24, the company has created a show that has put the age old story against the lives to two rival areas of London.
Yes, it sounds cliche. A 'street' version of Romeo and Juliet is nothing new. But from the small amount of rehearsals I've witnessed, I am looking forward to this production more than anything I've seen in a while. They are talented kids playing a story pretty close to the heart and bone. On commenting how well the actor playing Mercutio died on stage whilst in rehearsals, the Stage Manager added: 'the sad shame is that he has most probably seen it in real life'. I've heard snippets about the lives these kids have to return to when rehearsal end. I would have had no idea if I hadn't been told, they are simply, at all times, a bunch of enthusiastic, talented and sickeningly energetic young actors.
